The Case Against Raw Frozen Pet Foods
About 25 years ago that has put the public on the dangers of exclusively feeding processed foods. Feeding pets has progressed – actually digression – from food scraps and food of the royal family could dispense% today "100 total" processed foods in primarily kibble form, with some canned and semi-moist also available. Foods that seem to be scientific and improved, but is much worse for the animals. Not only is the nutritional value diminished by heat, but a spectrum of toxins is created. Furthermore, the unique power processed foods has led to the false "100% complete and balanced" claim that is both logically and scientifically flawed.
Entrepreneurs have used this information to create a series of frozen raw (RF) from food to capture a niche market and to meet the demand of consumers who want a premium alternatives to standard heat processed canned, semi-wet and dry pet foods. This market trend, as with most others, can start with some truth (raw food is the best food) but gets distorted, if not perverted, once the economic opportunity enters the picture. This paper will examine justification for these products, their economy and dangers. A more intelligent and healthy alternative proposed.
Hazards
1. Pets weak and highly virulent organisms – a raw state and the presence of moisture in food provide the perfect environment for the growth of pathogenic organisms. Although food prey in nature often rotting and filled with microorganisms, carnivores in the wild are immunologically adapted to these agencies and even benefit from probiotic effects of some. On the other hand, eating foods pets are thermally sterilized immunity and are threatened by mutated and highly virulent pathogens tensions created by modern circumstances and resistance to antibiotics. Freezing at appropriate temperatures puts pathogens in a state of arrest, but not removes them. Although all foods contain some pathogens, unless they are sterilized (requiring high temperatures or other measures that greatly diminish the value nutritional and create toxins), is the burden of these pathogens that must be of concern to consumers. RF foods are a potential reservoir and vector of a large number of pathogens.
2. Producers with kitchen technology Only – Due to the minimal technology required to produce a pet food RF, in essence, anyone, regardless of credentials or experience can bring a product to market. All one has to do is grind and mix ingredients in a kitchen, packages and put in freezer. There are no controls on the conditions in the kitchen, the quality of the ingredients or the method of freezing. All these factors can dramatically influence the nutritional value and pathogenic and toxic content of foods. However, he hides in a frozen state of these potential dangers, therefore constitutes a threat to both pets and humans deal with food. John Doe can make a food under unknown conditions and ingredients unknown, label, package, freeze and deliver to consumers or stores without a central command control or hinder the process. Regulators may eventually examine the label if they see in a store (which he will never see if it is sent directly to consumers) and the object of certain terminology or the like, but whatever John has to do is change the label and everything will be fine. The product may contain all kinds of ingredients, laced with virulent pathogens, and receive the aegis regulators … and the market goes.
3. Frozen Foods premiums are not "100% Complete" – Many RF foods make (or imply) the same spurious 100% demand total heat processed foods and thus carry the same health hazards. Feeding any food exclusively, to say nothing of packaged food anodyne containing who knows what from who knows what manufacturing environment is a poor choice for health and safety are a concern. (See truth about pet food by Dr. Wysong).
4. The problems are ignored by the producers – the RF food pathogens include not only the bacteria, but fungi, viruses and parasites. The toxins are the molds (mycotoxins), bacteria and those created by oxidation. In our study of the products RF in the stream of commerce, not a producer addressed these concerns with any technological know-how we can discern, and most do not even recognize the problems potential lurking in their food.
5. Freezing Masks inedible – Raw meat and organ tissue continues to use ATP (energy source) until it is exhausted and the tissue enters a state of rigor. The endogenous enzyme activity in the tissue continues to digest the muscle tissue (proteolysis), softening until becomes tender and develops the typical savory taste. This process is retarded by cold. The freezing of properly aged meat presents few problems, however, any residual ATP present in the tissue during freezing will contract the muscle upon thawing resulting in a product more unpleasant. Mixed foods with RF hide this problem.
6. Free Radical Problems Masked – Essential fatty acids and health improvement in lipids are essential in the diet. Once foods are ground, mixed, exposed to air, light and pro-oxidants such as heme iron and other metals found in plant and animal tissues, lipid contents are oxidized to chain reaction producing free radicals and toxins causing oxidative rancidity. Freezing temperatures low enough slows this process but not stop. The temperature in conventional freezers used for RF foods is not insurance against such oxidation. Because they consume the frozen state masks olfactory detection of rancidity, foods that would otherwise be rejected finish. The free radical pathology potential can work their chronic degenerative disease and immune weakening effects.
7. Freezer burn indicates a more serious problem – air to reach the surface meat is causing freezer burns that result in the typical gray leather brown spots. Frozen water on the surface or just beneath it sublimates (solid state directly to vapor) into the air, causing it to lose moisture from the meat during that results in discoloration and a dry texture, leather. Right Packaging helps maintain quality and prevent freezer burn, however most packaging is permeable to air. The prevalence of freezer burn in RF products speaks the fact that the product is oxidized with toxins that create free radicals to lay the seeds of various degenerative diseases.
8. Packaging Expose causes free radicals – light and air, can promote free radical production. Allows permeable consumer sales packaging that is clear or light light catalyze free radical (disease promoting) process.
9. Frozen products are not inert to degradation – In frozen storage occurs a deterioration in the organoleptic quality – texture of meat, fat turning granular and crumbly, and discoloration. Microbial enzymes also remain active, especially lipases that break down fats increasing their susceptibility to oxidation.
10. Frozen foods may lead to acidemia – degradation of tissues and oxidation under freezing high temperature (above 29 ° F), which occurs along the supply chain for most products RF also leads to acidification. Increasing acid consumption can contribute to acidemia that lies at the root of almost all chronic degenerative diseases modern pets suffering. (See reference below.)
11. The temperature and time are critical – from ice cores, in contrast to the crystallization ice is the primary vector for the production of a stable, tasty, frozen product. Freezing is a technically complex process based on the optimum combination temperature and weather, among other factors. Processor in the hands of evil, slips in proper freezing care can lead to a microbiologically unstable product and / or a lower sense. Rapid freezing leads to nucleation, which prevents unwanted ice crystals from forming throughout the product. With the freeze quick molecules have no time to form positions on the six faces characteristic snowflake, so nucleation overrides crystallization. Moreover, slow freezing (the usual RF situation) creates large ice crystals, which causes cell damage thawing meat. This in turn causes meat "drip" – lose juiciness – and form a perfect liquid medium for bacterial growth.
12. The high risk in Thawing – Thawing is another critical stage in the freezing process as it involves a change of water ice crystals melt, once the results of reabsorption in the reactivation Microbial. Pathogenic bacteria itself contaminate raw meat, fish and poultry and begin to multiply again when the temperature reaches only 29.3 º C – that is below zero! It's a product that may appear subjectively frozen could be a true incubator of pathogens. When consumers attempt of RF thaw food, the dangers increase dramatically. The surface temperature rises before the interior is sufficiently thawed to serve. For example, takes about 15 hours through a 22-pound turkey to reach 32 º F. In the interim surface temperature rises to 53 º F. In this amount of time it would about 4 multiplications
of spoilage bacteria and detectable multiplications of pathogens. The Model Code of FDA Food (1999) recommends that food defrosting in the refrigerator or running water. RF Defrost food in the refrigerator can be inefficient and slow, plus cooling occupying space needed by other foodstuffs. Above all, this procedure may eventually lead to the risk of cross contamination when the drip of raw poultry meat comes in contact with ready-to-eat foods stored in the refrigerator. In the alternative, consumers usually get a meal out of RF at room temperature, creating the perfect circumstance for pathogen proliferation.
13. Freeze thaw cycles undetected – The transit time of RF food processor (or John Doe's kitchen) to the distributor, to stores and eventually to the consumer is very critical. Although delivery trucks allegedly freezer could maintain a stable temperature of products, lack of thermocouples installed on the truck to show temperature readings and / or inadequate ITT (time indicators temperature) can lead to microbiologically infested products without obvious deterioration. If refrigeration anywhere in the supply chain not temporarily and then re-freeze (freeze-thaw-freeze), the consumer never knows about this abuse and danger.
14. The supply chain Hazards Weather – Weather is the enemy of nutrition and safety. The longer the time between the potato field and the belly, the greatest potential problems. RF foods create the illusion that the time is not a factor. Because the frozen state masks toxins and odors, the consumer may have the impression of value and freshness when in fact they can get the age and toxicity.
15. Microwave Thawing Dangers – If RF foods are thawed in the microwave as a matter of convenience, the value of food is compromised. Microwaves can virtually boil the liquid phase within cells and electromagnetically alter important food components rendering them not only useless nutritionally, but toxic.
16. Mycotoxins are not detected – RF foods, particularly those that are a mixture of cooked grains (which of course, denies the claim of "raw") and vegetables, can contain mycotoxins. None of the producers surveyed addressed this trouble.
17. Make mixtures of frozen No Health Sense – In an attempt to cover all bases to be predictable and not miss any opportunity for profit, many producers of RF mixes all kinds of ingredients. For example, watermelon, beans, persimmons, liver, lamb, etc, not only never creatures in their natural habitat like eating a mixed gruel at one sitting, such combinations of fresh, can cause serious digestive stress. Many of the RF exotic ingredients do not keep well in fresh frozen state (for example, freeze watermelon alone and see what happens, let alone combining it with meat). Furthermore, the combination of fruit sugars with proteins can potentially create toxins such as glycation end products, acrylamides (particularly in the "RF" foods containing carbohydrates carbon cooked) and the reaction products of proteins with tannins, phenols and flavonoids. Producers of "throwing the book" in the formulations of desperate attempts RF capture
market share to bring out their motives and their scientific, health and technical ingenuity.
18. Parasites are ignored – A wide range of parasites can be found in foods of RF. Although there is technology in terms of freezing and natural ingredients that can be used to prevent this problem, none of the producers consider any employee thereof that we can detect.
Packaging
The best environment for any food packaging, particularly RF foods, is light and oxygen-barrier and modified red. Without this, the product of lipid oxidation of toxic representation. None of the producers surveyed employed these technologies that could detect. Even if they did, the other problems and dangers listed above would remain.
Environment
We live in an age of pollution and decreased energy. RF foods require a tremendous amount of refrigeration and all along the supply route. Freezing is energy inefficient and consumes valuable energy resources. Since RF foods 70% water (at least) there are huge resources wasted in freezing and transporting the tons of this food-contained water through the supply chain. Along with all the equipment, transportation, freezing and frozen water handling inefficiency comes from the pollution that parallels such industry.
Quality
To ensure that their food anywhere near affordable, RF producers must search the ingredient market for items that may carry the name of real food, but in fact may be only a hollow shell of the real thing. Lower and organ meat ingredients, heat processed grains and vegetable riffraff (for example, "broccoli" on a label can really be broccoli stems – like eating a branch of an apple tree rather than the apple) are used because they are inexpensive. That does not mean that the marketing brochures and labels do not seem as if the brand is not a true gourmet meal. If one reviews the various labels it becomes clear that the race to see who can put the ingredients more exotic and elegant on the labels … as if that is the way to animal health. (It is not.) In a survey ingredient brief This is what we found:
Each form of "mash" of vegetables
Organic meat, rabbit, chicken, turkey, goat, lamb, duck, pork
Organic honey
Papaya organic persimmons, blueberries, oranges, apples, pears,
Organic Yoghurt
Organic alfalfa, millet, barley, quinoa and kale
Wheat grass
Ortigas
Bok choy
Kefir Cultured
Cod liver oil
Capsicum
Watermelon
The reader is challenged to go to the store and the total cost of these ingredients. Some organic ingredients can cost more than $ 15 per pound. But the RF diets containing them can retail for as little as $ 2-4 per pound. Removes the margins distributors and retail stores and the producer is selling wholesale about a dollar per pound. Now, on top of the cost of ingredients is the production, advertising, packaging, freezing and in some cases, a sales force making six figures. Something that certainly does not make sense. All that may be lacking is the quality of the ingredient truth. But how can the label say that these ingredients are expensive food? All producers have to do is put in pinches of the expensive ingredients only to say they are there.
The only economic hope for a RF producer is to create the perception of "added value". Simply could not make the expensive food ingredients in any degree, and made a profit for themselves and for all intermediaries up and down the chain. The price would that charge would be ridiculous. Indeed, in order to be successful, producers must be carried on propaganda, not health and nutrition.
Consumers interested in cutting through the truth for themselves and their pets as a service go to the grocery store with a list of ingredients apparently on a diet of RF. Although some RF diets in the lower range of prices seem to be trying to deceive, consumers should do the calculations comparing the exotic ingredients
RF Pet food prices for the real thing in the store and decide for themselves whether either the value or honesty resides in RF products.
Economy
The Consumers are under the mistaken assumption that a nondescript package mix of ingredients with an informal label and a producer posing as an authority nutrition (none of the producers had considered the people running with experience or credentials) would be the best option. They do not realize that they could avoid virtually all the caveats listed above by simply going to the grocery store and buying fresh meat and products. Pets do not require every nutrient in existence at each meal, as is the impression it gives 100% of full RF producers, and for that matter the rest of the pet food industry. Why people choose to pay a producer to mix inferior ingredients, package them, label them, freeze them, transport them, advertise them and pay the margin for the producer, the distributor, sales force and retail when you can avoid that all costs and put their money into real quality fresh foods? Some people are so convinced that RF manufacturers perform some magic that will pay for food and put in special insulated containers filled with dry ice and delivered overnight! This is particularly ridiculous when one considers that no real convenience – and certainly no health or nutritional value – is added in the process. The consumer still has to go to the store and buy something.
In the grocery store, a person can buy fresh meat, raw meat products contaminated and suitable for pet carnivores less than $ 1 per pound. Slightly out of date meat, sale items, ornaments or other great products that can not yet put in the meat case may even be less. True, if you buy the ingredients mentioned above in the perfect human grade organic form (as many producers have RF), the cost could be much higher. But at least you know what you are getting. RF foods can cost as much as $ 7 per pound with an average of around $ 3-4 per pound (not including shipping to the customer's door) and most of that cost is going to freeze, transport and benefits through a whole chain of participants. Here is a case in that a consumer gets to pay more (much more) and get less (much less). Is not marketing a wonderful thing?
A better alternative
Fresh foods fed in variety, no doubt the perfect form of nutrition. Appropriately designed supplements to help reduce the risk of pathogens Food and oxidation, and to help balance high meat meals and provide a spectrum of plant-based nutrients and nutraceuticals may also be of great benefit. Anything less is a compromise. The best alternative is packaged dried raw foods that have incorporated in them food technology to impede pathogens, parasites and oxidation. The low water activity of these products is a major inhibitor of pathogens and the low level of moisture make storage and shipping efficient and environmentally friendly. Leftover food from well-designed, good quality dry and canned food extrusion can be mixed into the diet rotation with benefit as well.
Consumers must learn the principles of fresh foods fed in variety and confidence in nature. Every pet owner wants the best for a beloved pet, and it is right in thinking food is an essential element in achieving that goal. But it is incorrect to believe that another person can do more for the health of your pet as they can do themselves. All it takes is a little understanding and use of common sense.

Pet Food and Supplies in Argentina $195 How to Strategically Evaluate Argentina. Perhaps the most efficient way of evaluating Argentina is to consider key dimensions which themselves are composites of multiple factors. Composite portfolio approaches have long been used by strategic planners. The biggest challenge in this approach is to choose the appropriate factors that are the most relevant to international planning. Pet Food Politics: $13.26 Marion Nestle, acclaimed author of Food Politics, now tells the gripping story of how, in early 2007, a few telephone calls about sick cats set off the largest recall of consumer products in U.S. history and an international crisis over the safety of imported goods ranging from food to toothpaste, tires, and toys. Nestle follows the trail of tainted pet food ingredients back to their source in China and along the supply chain to their introduction into feed for pigs, chickens, and fish in the United States, Canada, and other countries throughout the world. What begins as a problem “merely” for cats and dogs soon becomes an issue of tremendous concern to everyone. Nestle uncovers unexpected connections among the food supplies for pets, farm animals, and people and identifies glaring gaps in the global oversight of food safety. |
